Buttel Railroad Museum
The Buttel Railroad Museum is one of the best privately supported railroad museums in the Texas Panhandle . This "can't miss" site for railfans features standard gauge rolling stock and related equipment, exhibited on 1 1/2 acre site, just south of Amarillo, Texas.

The museum was established in 2000 to preserve for future generations a hands of experience for railroad enthusiast to see and occupy Texas area railroad rolling stock and equipment.

Museum Visitor Hours and Information

The museum is open every day from Noon to 5:00 PM. We are closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Please call for hours on Easter Sunday, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve.

For extended hours past 5pm, call 806.670.1314   Museum grounds close at 5:00 PM.
During the summer months of June, July, and August, we stay open until 6:00 PM.

NO ADMISSION CHARGE - DONATIONS APPRECIATED

We have a large picnic area on the grounds with a Gazebo and invite our guests to bring food and beverages to the museum.

Museum Location

The Buttel Railroad Museum is located at 3907 W. Sundown Lane, only 1 mile south of Amarillo city limits. Take Western Street south approximately 1 mile south of Hollywood Rd, turn left on Sundown, look for sign on RH side.  Look at the Google map on our CONTACT Page.


Children's Groups: Advanced reservations are required. Length of stay (90 minutes limit on groups plus time for lunch in picnic area if desired). MAXIMUM 30 children. All groups must be supervised and controlled at all times. We require one adult supervisor for every seven children (ages 10 and up) and one supervisor for every five children (under 10).


Birthday Parties: Call the office for reservations in our big Santa Fe caboose. The caboose holds about twenty people comfortably. Fee is $150.00, which covers, exclusive use of the caboose for an hour and a half, (up to 20ea adults and children) 10" round cake, and a small donation to the museum. The caboose has electric lighting, and heat can be provided in the winter.
Upon scheduling, we will clean out the caboose and lock it until the birthday group arrives. Signs will be posted that caboose is reserved for exclusive use of the party. You must supply party favors and any other needs. Click here for photo of caboose.

Weddings: The museum hosts weddings on the grounds throughout the year. We can provide many different areas for wedding ceremonies: two open platform observation cars, a small park-like picnic grove, and several areas on the museum grounds. The fee is $250.00 for admissions of the wedding party, use of the facility, and a small donation to the museum. We do not provide chairs, tables or any other facilities usually found at outdoor weddings.

We also host company picnics, family reunions, class reunions, senior class days, and senior citizen groups.  Call for rates:
